So, reading my feminist books, I came across a story about one 19th century feminist that made me think of some of the homeschoolers here in Hillsdale... odd, huh?

May 1838, when Angelina [Grimke] received in the mail a proposal of marriage from her speaking mentor, Theodore Weld. With many capitals and underlinings indicating his perturbation and the depths of his feeling, he declared modestly that he realized that his declaration would surprise and shock Angelina and that he had no hope his feeling would be reciprocated. Then, apparently worried that it is not entirely fitting that a man who had dedicated his life to God and to abolition should permit his mind to be diverted to more earthly and pleasant affairs, he added for his own justification: "I do love the God our righteousness better than I love you." These words may in turn have bothered him as seeming to limit his affection for Angelina, for he explained: "And it is because I love him better that I love you as I do."

Angelina did reciprocate his feelings, but apparently she had problems of her own... "I laid awake thinking why it was that my heart longed and panted and reached for you as it does. Why my Savior and my God is not enough to satisfy me. Am I sinning, am I ungrateful, am I an IDOLATOR?"
